Bally chohan sad Jelastic, creators of a PaaS (platform-as-a-service) infrastructure for Java application development has added new features to ensure automated high availability of Java apps. Jelastic lets devs run any Java app in the cloud without code changes and or rewrites for APIs, and offers a full range of support for creating, deploying, scaling and managing apps.

Jelastic, creators of a PaaS (platform-as-a-service) infrastructure for Java application development has added new features to ensure automated high availability of Java apps.

Jelastic was built to help devs focus on innovation and writing code, and avoid the need to spend time and energy managing and configuring servers, or worry about infrastructure problem, according to Ruslan Synytsky, founder and CEO of Jelastic.

Jelastic runs any Java app in the cloud without code changes and without writing for specific APIs, and already supports a full range of simple to use features for creating, deploying, scaling and managing applications, according to Synytsky. In specific, devs using Jelastic have a wide selection stack components, including application servers (Tomcat, GlassFish and Jetty), databases (MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB), nginx load balancer, and Maven build system,. This wide choice of components, in turn, helps ensure applications will run and scale easily on Jelastic platform, he added.

Jelastic’s latest HA (high availability) features are simple to access. When devs click a button, from within the environment configuration, Jelastic will then clusters each application server with another application server running on a separate virtual machine and replicates sessions between them, Synytsky said.

Jelastic also will automatically configure the load balancer, including the enabling of cookie-based/sticky sessions. By this approach, if one application server fails or is taken offline for maintenance or application upgrade, the other machine keeps running off the stored sessions it was sharing within the cluster.

An excerpt from the Jelastic blog describes the process and the technology is more detail, with an example of how it provides high availability for GlassFish.

Up until now, GlassFish could be used as a separate server within Jelastic, but now you have the option for high-availability for GlassFish, allowing for full instance and cluster replication.

We kept the native GlassFish clustering architecture, based on the concept of and administrative domain. Administrative domains consist of clusters and instances, which are controlled by DAS (Domain Administration Server). You can manage the central repository using the Admin Console. It is an easy to use GUI which supports all features available in GlassFish. DAS manages Java instances in the domain. GMS (Group Management Service) is responsible for providing the information about a cluster and its instances.

Jelastic also takes care of session replication in GlassFish Instances in clusters are paired up. If one of the instances fails, the users who were on that instance get automatically switched to the other instance in the cluster. The replicated instance has all of the sessions that were in the failed instance: end-users never notice any change. If for some reason both instances in a cluster fail, users get redirected to another cluster. Jelastic uses NGINX as a load balancer, which can redirect users’ requests when instances fail.

All these services come without vendor lock-in, he said. “Jelastic’s technology makes all of this possible and it is as easy as pointing and clicking,” Synytsky added.

The automated vertical scalability feature within Jelastic adds the memory and processing resources to the machines when necessary so if one server goes down, the alternate server not only gets the sessions of the failed server, but also the CPU and RAM required to serve them, officials said. Because the process happens automatically, the end-users are not even aware that anything has happened. It also mitigates human error and enables developers to focus on creating apps.

SEATTLE, Jan 16, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Amazon Web Services LLC (AWS), an Amazon.com company AMZN -0.10% , today announced that customers can now run their Microsoft Windows Server applications within the AWS Free Usage Tier — a program designed to help new AWS customers get started in the cloud. Developers and businesses with Windows Server applications can take advantage of 750 hours of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) Micro Instance usage per month, at no charge for a one year period. With the expansion of the AWS Free Usage Tier, Windows developers now have access to the same free resources on AWS as Linux developers — providing the ability to launch new applications, test existing applications in the cloud, or gain hands-on experience with AWS. For more details and information on getting started with Windows on AWS, visit http://aws.amazon.com/windows/ .

“Our customers want the flexibility to choose how they build their applications without being locked into a particular programming model, language, or operating system. We continue to focus on increasing that flexibility,” said Peter De Santis, General Manager of Amazon EC2. “Through our continued work with Microsoft, Windows developers now have an opportunity to see, at no cost, how they can leverage Amazon Web Services’ scalable and cost-effective computing environment.”

Organizations of all sizes are taking advantage of the breadth and capabilities of running Windows Server applications on AWS. For example, when redesigning Treasury.gov, which is powered by AWS, the United States Department of Treasury integrated their current Microsoft SharePoint 2010 workloads to improve technology efficiencies, provide increased collaboration capabilities, and comply with the Federal Cloud First Initiative. Knovolo, a mobile marketing firm, runs their Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server applications on AWS. Integrating these applications with Amazon EC2 and Amazon CloudFront services to develop, manage and deploy their mobile marketing application has allowed them to reduce costs and scale as needed by paying only for the capacity used.

The AWS Free Usage Tier addition joins a number of recent AWS service extensions to support Windows customers, including Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 on the high power Cluster Compute instances, Microsoft SQL 2012 beta preview on AWS, Microsoft BizSpark Licenses on AWS, and support for Microsoft Windows HPC clusters using Amazon EC2 instances. To learn more about the AWS Free Usage tier, please visit http://aws.amazon.com/free/ and to get started with Windows on AWS, visit http://aws.amazon.com/windows/ .

Open source is winning the Java application-server war in the age of the cloud, according to a new survey.

Web application performance company New Relic released results of its recent study on commercial vs. open-source Java application server usage among enterprises. The result: open source is winning by an overwhelming margin when it comes to web applications.

New Relic surveyed 1,000 customers to get some data on the state of open-source in business today. According to the results, over 80 percent of enterprise users across five main industries (business software, consumer internet, ecommerce, gaming, and social web) are using open source Java app servers like Apache TomCat, Jboss, jetty:// and GlassFish, over commercial Java servers from Oracle and IBM.

The big move by enterprises from legacy vendors to open-source corresponds to a survey last year of 600 IT professionals regarding their sentiment on Oracle’s control of open-source projects Java and MySQL. At the time, 42 percent of those surveyed believe that open-source would stagnate under Oracle’s control.

Overall, it’s not surprising that users who are deploying their applications to the cloud are more likely to use open source, if for no other reason than that licensing is far simpler. Additionally, there are Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) available for most open source stacks, making it very easy to choose open source over a traditionally licensed application server.

In an attempt to appease opponents of the controversial scheme, including some Tory MPs, Transport Secretary Justine Greening announced extra tunnelling for sections of the 140-mile route between London and Birmingham.

The link between the UK’s two biggest cities will form phase one of the scheme, with a hybrid bill being introduced in Parliament next year.

This first £16.4 billion phase, introducing 225mph trains and cutting London-Birmingham journey times to 49 minutes, would be completed in 2026.

A second phase, taking HS2 to Manchester and Leeds in a Y-shaped route, would be completed around 2032/33.

The Government envisages stops in the East Midlands and South Yorkshire and links to the existing West Coast and East Coast main lines which would enable through-running services to reach Liverpool, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Journey times from London to Scotland’s major cities would be cut to around three hours 30 minutes, while London-Manchester and London-Leeds journey times would be reduced to 80 minutes.

A commitment to taking it up to Scotland has not yet been made, but rail operators say that the financial case for the vastly expensive rail link only stacks up once it runs right down the spine of the country, from Edinburgh or Glasgow to London.

Labour is expected to support the HS2 plans, but it remains to be seen whether the changes announced today will be enough to satisfy Ms Gillan and other Tory “rebels”.

The Government reckons the scheme will produce economic benefits of £47 billion over 60 years. It also says that improving existing infrastructure will not be enough to cope with overcrowding on an increasingly-busy rail network.

Opponents of the scheme say the Government’s economic benefit calculations are wildly over-optimistic, there is no real business case for HS2, and the whole scheme is just a “vanity project”.

Bally chohan . High-altitude atmospheric researchers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., needed data recorders and embedded computing servers for the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) project. They found their solution from One Stop Systems Inc. in Escondido, Calif.

One Stop Systems has delivered several of its MDA-T5 data recorders and 3U servers to NASA Dryden for the SOFIA astronomy project. The rugged MIL-STD disk array is a RAID storage system with dual removable drive packs and dual SBB 2.0-compliant high-speed controllers, each with two Fibre Channel 8-gigabit-per-second inputs.

The MDA-T5 moves data over the Fibre Channel connection to the 3U server at transfers speeds faster than 700 megabytes per second, company officials say. The dual six-disk removable drive packs in the MDA-T5 help users remove the data quickly from the aircraft and transfer it to ground systems while maintaining the RAID configuration for each drive pack.

SOFIA is a joint program by NASA and the German Aerospace Center to complement the Hubble, Spitzer, Herschel, and James Webb space telescopes and major Earth-based telescopes. SOFIA has a German-built 100-inch far-infrared telescope weighing 20 tons mounted in the rear fuselage of a modified Boeing 747SP jumbo jet.

MineCraft VPS hosting companies allow control over almost every aspect of your game. Ever been frustrated by slow response times in online games? In the world of MineCraft, completing captivating creations or being overcome by a mob can say more about server administration than your skills. Maybe your problem isn’t response time but overbearing system administrators. A host uses seemingly omnipotent power to control the environment and characters in the online world. Who gets to determine what characters can do in games like MineCraft? The system administrator!

Available options allow anyone to become administrator of a Virtual Private Server (VPS) at relatively low cost. MineCraft VPS hosting companies allow control over almost every aspect of your game. As host, the game’s no longer just about blocks and battling mobs while fighting hunger. As system administrator, your game takes on new dimensions. What rules will you enforce in your world of MineCraft? Which players get deleted and which characters simply get edited? Will you allow players to grief? These questions are the domain of the game’s host and anyone else they delegate when using MineCraft VPS.

This can be a lot of responsibility if you’ve never done it before. You might be familiar with shared hosting for your website, but generally speaking game servers are not supported or tolerated on such servers. A dedicated server might seem the best available option if game speed is your only consideration, but without additional assistance your knowledge of computers better be up to the task of server maintenance. A game server VPS is often the best option for first time system administrators, and the relatively low cost makes it easy to get your feet wet in the world of Game Server hosting.

With VPS hosting, a server’s resources are divided according to the host’s service plan. Therefore, the bandwidth consumption of other sites on the server doesn’t interfere with your site’s performance. This is a definite plus over a shared server. VPS can only be outperformed by a dedicated server. So why not just host a game on a dedicated server? The simple answer is that hosting a game on a dedicated server eats up much time and energy.

Generally, to host a game online you’ll need at least two physical computers plus the knowledge to administrate not only your game but also the server. You’ll need a physical Internet connection and the knowledge to keep your server running. Dedicated server hosts can provide you with these services, but expect to pay for what you get. With a dedicated server, this price could be in the hundreds of dollars. On the other hand, a VPS host can offer packages starting at under $20 per month. For this price, you don’t hassle with maintaining the server, but still choose who you play with as well as how you play. In this light, a game server VPS hosting plan is generally the most cost-effective option because first time administrators can learn how to administrate a game before tackling their own server.

Bally chohan , city administrator of West Branch, withdrew his wave-making rule proposed in the West Branch City Council’s update of procedural rules at the council’s start-of-year meeting Tuesday.

Rule 27, among the 58 proposed items for the new council’s approval, would have required members of the public and the media to request permission, and notify all present, in order to use audio and video recorders and other recording devices (like cell phones and cameras) before, during and after meetings, according to documents from the council’s work session.

Bally chohan said the proposals were based on “best practices” from various municipalities, counties and other governmental bodies, including the Iowa League of Cities General Council, he said.

The recording proposal was drawn from the Missouri House of Representatives, where he’s previously served, adding he thought his experience with this rule worked well in the past.

But the rule raised ethical questions, since the use of recording devices is legal at any open session, as per the state’s open meetings law.

“It was obviously stupid to even consider it,” said former council member David Johnson, who threatened to file a complaint with the state if it was approved.

Johnson, a Democratic candidate for the Iowa House of Representatives, wasn’t in attendance Tuesday night due to speaking engagements at two caucuses, but his wife, Jennie Embree, was present at the works session with an audio recorder. She said she wasn’t the only one with a device, either.

Bally chohan said it was never the city’s intent to discourage people from recording meetings, but to encourage a positive working environment where people feel welcome and the council can be productive and effective.

He said he is happy with the set of rules, which included updated codes of conduct and ethics for members.

Two city staffers are also working to fix technical problems with cable access that has caused council sessions not to be broadcast on public TV recently, he said.
